Stella Jack. January 14th.

Stella lived in Broughton for many years before moving to the Flats in Stevens Drove. She was a keen supporter of all village and Church events and for a period helped deliver Meals-on Wheels. An increasing lack of mobility made her decide to move to a Home in Bristol to be near her family. Stella was a school matron before retiring and she often spoke with pride of her time at Cheam School when Prince Charles was a pupil.

Dorothy Annie Moore January 29th

Dorothy , or Annie as she was sometimes called, was born in Longstock in 1911 and went to school there. She came to Houghton when she married Harry in 1938, and their first home was in Walnut Cottage, then 3 cottages, and lived in the middle one. Harry worked on the land, and later joined the railway. When Beeching closed this he went to work for Mr Doe (of Hunters Cottage) in his works at Eastleigh. Dorothy and Harry and family were among the first to move into the new houses in Stevens Drove, and chose No 7 for its potential as a good vegetable patch, which led to the friendly rivalry at the Annual Horticultural Show. Dorothy was always busy in home and garden and helping in various house. And she provided some very welcome accommodation to several Land Girls when their hostel burnt down and they lost everything. Homefield is on that site now. After Harry’s death she stayed at no 7 for several years before moving to a Care Home and it was here that she died, 2 weeks before her 99th birthday.
