The Houghton Fun Run
Sunday 27th April 2008

The hall was a-buzz, the kitchen a-busy,
The Registrars Registered;till they were dizzy!
The coffee and tea, and cake sold a-plenty
As people poured in from around the country
The cars piled up high, START sign on display
As the Trek on the Trailside got underway

Thunder and rain, oh groan, what a pain!
Will it dampen the spirits of the runners and cyclists?
No fear they did cheer, with grins split ear to ear,
The ground will get wetter, the more mud the better!
Right-oh, on we go, Dickie started the show,
And they're off!, first the bikers, then off went the hikers
and runners and sprinters then Fun Runners last
Children and buggies all scrambled past!
The numbers of white and yellow and green
Have now become a familiar scene

With the Finish in sight now starts the fight!

Vision a-tunnel, to be first through the funnel
Flat out on the pedal, Three Cheers! Here your medal!
Well done all of you that climbed up all those hills
And made the last dash to raise all that cash
As once again on an April day
240 contestants turned out to play
For All Saints Church in Houghton.
Three Cheers, Hip Hooray!

Cyclists, runners and walkers came from far and wide and raved over the beautiful countryside and friendly village atmosphere. The real cups of real tea served by real village folk were heartily hailed on the website Runner World, as were the oranges! Many have vowed to come back next year. A good number of emails have come in with thanks for putting this on in such a beautiful setting.

£1,500 was raised thanks to the 240 contestants, the organisers and the willing volunteers who directed the cars, took entries on the day, made tea and coffee, sold cakes, gave out medals, recorded times, provided First Aid, set up, tidied up, marshalled, put up signs, arrows and funnels then took them all back down again, course-swept the contestants you name it, they did it. Ro-Dor kindly opened their premises to allow free car parking. Thank you so much to you all.
