W.I.News

2011 ended on a musical note when members and guests enjoyed songs by the Shirazz Ladies Barbershop Quartet. Together with a glass of wine and an American supper they also gave a brief history of how the Ladies groups started.

Pre-Christmas activities had included a visit to the House and Fair at Highclere, a Christmas decorations evening and meetings of the Book and Lunch Club. The musical theme continued at the first meeting of 2012 with 6 members of the Bishops Waltham Bell Ringers team. As well as playing they gave the history of Bell Ringing through the centuries. Then it was the turn for W.I. members to have a go. Amidst much hilarity they had to admit they needed a little more practice before their first concert.

On January 13th 5 members went to Otterborne to see 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. This was all that a Panto should be with a Dame a Fairy, Baddy and a Panto Cow. Costumes and Scenery were Outstanding for the lovely bright colours. A splendid show with all the old traditions.

NEXT MEETING. 20th February. Speaker Jim Pascoe on 'Costa Rica'.

Magazine subs are now due - £5 please. If paying by cheque please make it payable to Houghton P.C.C.

Why the WI?

I am a member of the WI

And I ask myself the reason why?

I'll tell you why in this rhyme,

We meet once a month, come rain or shine.

We have interesting slides and talks,

And often go for Country walks.

Competitions and Raffles we share,

And vote Flower of the Month With coppers we spare.

There's a section from which we can borrow a Book,

And buy from the Sales Tables after a look.

Tea, Coffee, Biscuit or Cake,

Displays of things we sometimes make.

To Shows, Trips, and interesting places,

We see wonderful sights and meet new faces.

We stall out at the village Autumn Fair,

For which help and support is always there.

So you can see when all's said and done,

For one and all, it's jolly good Fun.

The bus shelter opposite The Boot has this superb display of hanging baskets. All due to the hard work of W.I. members Doreen Stokes and Julie Moldon. They have been in place all summer and still retained their freshness when this photograph was taken during the last week of September.
